Comedian, actress and writer Sarah Silverman doesn’t shy away from politically incorrect material, taking on subjects including race, sexuality, politics, Jewish identity and even the Holocaust.
Most people who are familiar with Sarah’s work won’t be surprised to learn that Sarah has been compared to controversial comedians Lenny Bruce and Sandra Bernhard. What may surprise people who are acquainted with Sarah’s comedy is that one of her three older sisters is a rabbi. Rabbi Susan Silverman lives with her family in Jerusalem and Sarah is very close with her.
Sarah and her sisters were raised in the predominately Christian town of Bedford, NH, as secular Jews. Sarah isn’t religious and doesn’t believe in God, but she identifies as ethnically and culturally Jewish.
In 1999 Sarah rescued a dog named Duck, a chihuahua pug mix, who lived with her for 14 years. When Duck passed away in 2013, Sarah wrote what she referred to as “an obituary-type thing” in memory of her beloved dog. Sarah’s concluded by writing the following:
Sep 6, 2013, 12:12 14 years.
My longest relationship.
My only experience of maternal love.
My constant companion.
My best friend.
Duck.
Sarah now has a dog named Mary.
